At Envision’s People Reaching for Independence and the Development of Excellence (PRIDE) program, every day is an opportunity to build confidence, strengthen skills and experience life on your own terms. For adults who are both blind and intellectually or developmentally disabled (IDD), PRIDE offers a licensed day service that blends choice, community, and rehabilitation.

PRIDE is a person-centered program that blends community engagement, skill-building and personal growth for a historically underserved population. Participants aren’t assigned to the program; they choose it. Much like selecting a job or service provider, every individual tours multiple programs and makes the decision that fits their goals best.

The program currently serves 37 individuals, with capacity for up to 44. It replaces outdated systems of institutional care with a supportive environment that prioritizes real-world engagement and individualized growth.

Each day at PRIDE balances enrichment with progress. Some individuals choose to work, others take part in activities like yoga, personal training or visits to art galleries, shopping centers and local restaurants. These choices aren’t just about enjoyment, they’re building blocks of independence.

“It’s about being able to do the things you love and enjoy,” said Jared Holcomb, Senior Director, Workforce Readiness and Education. “This program allows them to do all those things.”

In every interaction, PRIDE staff emphasize autonomy and purpose. One recent project had individuals working alongside staff to create handmade coffee filter flowers, which were later delivered to local nursing homes. The activity fostered fine motor skills, teamwork and creativity while also reinforcing the value of giving back. In another moment, an individual was supported in receiving a guitar, unlocking a new outlet for expression and self-confidence.

These experiences reflect a larger purpose. At PRIDE, choice fuels growth. The program helps individuals strengthen real-world skills like orientation and mobility, social interaction and self-advocacy, all within the context of their daily lives.

“We want to push for people to live as independently as they can,” Holcomb said. “And maximize the amount of freedom and choices they can have.”

At PRIDE, independence doesn’t follow a single path. It looks different for everyone. But whether it’s a trip to the zoo or learning to navigate public transportation, every step is guided by respect and the belief that all people deserve the chance to live fully. Through individualized care and meaningful support, Envision is helping adults with blindness and IDD overcome barriers and build lives rooted in dignity, growth and possibility.
