Innovative Changes Enhance Support for BVI Employees at Envision Xpress

Leadership at Envision Xpress are spearheading transformative initiatives to strengthen support for new and existing employees who are blind or visually impaired (BVI) across all Base Supply Centers (BSCs). Recognizing the need for more personalized support and on-the-job training, Marybeth Clare, BVI Advocacy and Training Coordinator for Envision Xpress, Nikki Gathard, Sales and Merchandising Manager for Envision Xpress, and Justin Morgan, VP of Retail Operations for Envision Xpress, have worked on refining their process to equip BVI employees for success. Their goal is to ensure new hires not only excel in their roles but also build lasting connections with store staff and the surrounding community. 

In September, Clare and Gathard traveled to Envision Xpress Minot and Grand Forks Air Force Bases in North Dakota to begin implementing their new processes. They met with current BVI employees and store managers, discussing updated training needs and additional support for BVI staff on-site.  

"Being on-site in all our centers and maintaining open communication allows us to better refine our onboarding process from day one," says Gathard. "We’re developing a method that not only supports managers in training new hires but also helps BVI employees feel connected to the community and their personal growth inside and outside the workplace." 

As part of these changes, Clare and Gathard are researching local living, transportation options, clubs and activities for employees, and creating personalized training plans at each BSC. Their hands-on approach ensures each employee receives the support they need for long-term success.  

"This type of research and dedication is what sets Envision apart," explained Gathard. "We want every BVI employee to feel confident, comfortable, and empowered to pursue their personal and professional goals. We’re working to shift the mindset to one where growth and success are the focus." 

The visit also offered the opportunity to engage with vocational rehabilitation job placement agencies and state representatives in North Dakota, highlighting the life-changing impact Envision Xpress has on both North Dakota residents and the nation. By fostering these relationships, the goal is to turn government leaders into advocates for the AbilityOne program and Envision’s mission.  

“The strategies we are putting into place ensure that our workforce feels valued and connected,” shared Morgan. “This will significantly enhance commitment and long-term engagement with our mission.” 

With new methodology and enhanced in-person training, the leadership at Envision Xpress are excited to see the development that will take place at each store location.
