Gopalakrishnan recently shared her journey and work in the field of low vision care and augmented reality in an Insight Radio podcast episode, a facet of Vision Science Academy. Vision Science Academy is an international membership organization of vision science professionals with the goal of increasing eye health professionals and health systems' capacity to treat and prevent blindness and visual cognitive impairment.
In the podcast episode Gopalakrishnan discusses her transition from clinician to researcher, the motivation behind her focus on assistive technology for people with vision loss, the importance of functional visual assessment and its impact on rehabilitation services and more. Gopalakrishnan was also announced as a Senior Advisor on Vision Science Academy's Advisory Board, an admirable and high-profile appointment within the industry.
“I am excited to be on the advisory board because there are board members who have exemplary achievements in the field of vision science from all over the world,” said Gopalakrishnan. “It will be a great opportunity to meet and collaborate with world class researchers, clinicians and academicians in one place.”
When asked why being a Senior Advisor and being a guest on the Insight Radio podcast was important to her, Gopalakrishnan responded, “It is paramount for me to encourage young optometrists and researchers in the field of vision science, especially for girls. There will be millions of forces which will try to stop you, but there will be at least one string of hope which will help you to move forward in your life. Catch hold of that one string and move forward with confidence and motivation. In the words of Mahatria Ra, "The greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do"!”
