‘PRISM’, the newest addition to the Keeper on Parade series, which is part of the Wichita Chamber of Commerce’ strategic initiative to amplify civic pride and enhance quality of life for all residents in Wichita. This public art sculpture was made by over 30 artists who are blind and visually impaired through Envision's Art Program, Child Development Center, Adult Day Support Program, and students from Heartspring. Located at Cargill Protein Headquarters in downtown Wichita, this sculpture represents the combined efforts of Cargill and Envision to create a significant landmark that both enriches the local cultural heritage and promotes the extraordinary abilities of individuals with visual impairments, symbolizing the diversity of Wichita’s community.
'PRISM’ took more than 80 hours to create, with each individual diamond of the Keeper’s headdress made by a blind or visually impaired artist. Sarah Kephart, Senior Manager of Envision Arts, carefully curated her design vision for ‘PRISM’, with each mosaic element, such as the stocks of wheat, corn, and green pastures, symbolizing Cargill's deep roots in agriculture and the landscapes of Kansas. Kephart shares, "I came up with the concept for ‘PRISM’ after touring Cargill and understanding their mission, core values, and the role they play in our lives. I also wanted to celebrate the spirit of the Indigenous cultures of Wichita and Kansas and honoring this great land of ours that provides us with the essential elements to thrive."
At the unveiling ceremony, gratitude was expressed from Envision to Cargill and the Wichita Regional Chamber of Commerce for their unwavering support of Envision's mission and Sarah Kephart's vision for this project. The public was also joined by KAKE and KSN local news, who covered the event. As the sculpture was revealed to the public, Hans Kabet, President of Cargill North America, expressed his gratitude, stating, "It’s a remarkable thing, the way that Envision works with artists who are blind or visually impaired. That kind of a team coming together to produce something meaningful is a story that we love, and the fact that this statue in front of our building gets to tell that story, the story of what happens when a teamwork full of diversity gets something remarkable done, is incredible.”
‘PRISM’ now stands proudly as a symbol of Wichita’s rich heritage and beckons residents and visitors alike to explore its intricacies and embrace the diversity that defines Wichita. 'PRISM' is located outside Cargill headquarters in Wichita, KS at 825 E. Douglas Ave and is open to the public to view.
