A New Model for Continuing Education in Vision Rehabilitation
Blog Content
Continuing education in the vision rehabilitation field is evolving—and the Envision and VisionServe Alliance Conference reflects that shift.
In May 2026, Envision and VisionServe Alliance will bring their national conferences together into a single, collaborative event: the Envision and VisionServe Alliance Conference. Rather than separating clinical education and research from leadership and organizational development, the conference combines these perspectives into one experience designed for clinicians, researchers, program leaders, and executives to learn together.
A Collaborative Model
The model builds on a longstanding relationship between the two organizations and a shared belief that meaningful progress happens when different parts of the field are aligned. By bringing together professionals across clinical, research, and organizational roles, the conference creates space for learning that extends beyond any single discipline.
“As healthcare grows more complex, the need for collaboration across disciplines is more pressing than ever,” said Michael Epp, Manager of Professional Education at Envision. However, the choice of a collaborative education model must be intentional and responsive to clinical context, vision rehabilitation goals, and delivery environments.
Expanding the Conversation
VisionServe Alliance’s involvement adds a broader emphasis on leadership, strategy, and sustainability—areas that have not traditionally been integrated into clinically focused conferences. With a network of more than 130 organizations, the alliance brings perspectives on workforce development, advocacy, funding, and systems-level planning, expanding the conversation from individual practice to field-wide impact.
"VisionServe Alliance and its leaders understand that we are at a turning point in our field and must employ innovative, aggressive strategies, collaboration, and networking leadership principles to expand services nationally," said Lee Nasehi, President & CEO, VisionServe Alliance. “This conference is a pivotal opportunity for all leaders in our field with systemic, business, clinical, and research expertise to connect in vital strategic action-oriented discussions, to accelerate the enhancement of direct service delivery across organizations and communities.”
The Role of Envision University
For Envision University, the collaboration represents an expansion in scope. The conference builds on a strong foundation in multidisciplinary clinical education while incorporating leadership, strategy, and systems-level thinking. It also strengthens Envision University’s role as a national convener, bringing together a wider cross-section of the blindness and low vision field.
Integrated Learning in Practice
Conference content reflects this integrated approach, with sessions spanning clinical advancements, emerging technologies, leadership strategy, workforce development, and community mobility. The structure is designed not only to share knowledge, but to connect ideas across disciplines and roles.
Together, this approach reinforces the role of continuing education as more than skill-building. It becomes a way to align priorities, strengthen organizations, and support broader progress across the field.
Continuing Education Through Envision University
The conference is one part of Envision’s broader approach to multidisciplinary continuing education through Envision University.
Envision University brings together clinical training, professional education, and field-wide learning opportunities designed to support clinicians, service providers, and organizational leaders at every stage of their work. From hands-on training and specialized coursework to conferences and collaborative learning experiences, the focus is on building practical skills while also strengthening the systems that support people who are blind or have low vision.
This model reflects a growing need for cross-disciplinary continuing education that goes beyond individual disciplines. By connecting clinical expertise with leadership development, research, and organizational strategy, Envision University helps professionals not only deepen their knowledge, but apply it in ways that improve outcomes across the field.
Looking Ahead
The 2026 conference will bring this model to life, offering a space for shared learning, connection, and collaboration across the field.
Attendees are expected to leave with practical strategies they can apply in clinical care, rehabilitation services, leadership, advocacy and organizational planning, along with stronger peer connections and a broader perspective on the future of the field.
The long-term goal is to support ongoing collaboration that improves quality of life and expands opportunities for people who are blind or have low vision.
