What is low vision?

Low vision is any vision impairment that cannot be fully corrected with standard eyeglasses, contact lenses, medicinal intervention or eye surgery. Low vision is a measure of visual acuity, visual field loss, contrast sensitivity and visual function; it results in reduced or blurred vision, usually 20/70 corrected or worse, or an incomplete field of view. The primary causes of low vision are eye diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Low vision can also be inherited or caused by an eye or brain injury. However, there is hope. If vision impairment is interfering with daily activities, employment, education or quality of life, vision rehabilitation can help.
