Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind became part of the Envision family on April 10, 2018.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with a great group of third grade students at Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet elementary school in Dallas. As is common during my community outreach presentations, I shared a few of my personal stories of triumph over impediments, determination over fear and resilience over shortcomings, and I did my best to equip the students with new tools and clarity about the importance of turning life’s challenges into a purpose in life.

I was glad the students weren’t bashful about asking questions, and I loved their enthusiasm. In fact, they asked some of the best questions I’ve received about life and blindness. Sharing my childhood stories with this group brought back some of my fondest memories. Being completely blind since infancy, I consider my visual impairment as a true gift to share and a reminder to never limit one’s self by self-imposed barriers. That message pertains to individuals who are typically sighted or visually impaired.
