Baseball is considered America’s national pastime. Arlene Owens’ goal is to make beep baseball just as popular at Envision.
Arlene, who works as an e-commerce customer service associate in Envision Xpress, and her husband, Ira, recently formed the Wichita Falcons beep baseball team. Several Envision employees have already expressed interest in filling the roster under Coach Ira, but there is still room for more. The majority of positions are reserved for individuals who are blind or visually impaired, but sighted volunteers are needed as spotters, catchers and pitchers.
“Ira and I want to offer more options for adults and teens who are blind or visually impaired to participate in an organized sport,” Arlene said. “We want to encourage them to get out of the house, socialize and stay active and healthy.”
This year, the Wichita Falcons, will focus on practicing, participating in scrimmages and holding fundraising events. The goal is to begin competitive play next year against teams in other cities and make a trip to the National Beep Baseball Association World Series. Travel will be a necessity since Wichita doesn’t have any other beep baseball teams to compete against.
The important step of obtaining nonprofit status has been completed, and Envision is already on board as the team’s first sponsor. More sponsors are needed, however, to cover costs for uniforms, equipment, tournament fees and travel expenses.
If you would like to join the team or know of a business or organization that would like to sponsor the Wichita Falcons, please contact Arlene by email at falcons@nbba.org. Follow Envision on Facebook at http://facebook.com/helpenvision to receive team updates and dates for future fundraisers.
