Dr. Rajkumar Raveendran, sponsored by LC Industries, joined ERI as a Research Fellow in September of 2017. His research has two main focuses: (1) to better understand eye movement in people with central vision  loss in order to improve the quality of images seen using peripheral (side) vision; and (2) to see whether non-invasive brain stimulation techniques could be used as a potential tool for visual rehabilitation in people with low vision due to central vision loss. Dr. Raveendran’s work has gained international visibility and recognition over the last three years through multiple publications in academic journals, invited lectures, and scientific conference presentations. In August of 2019, Dr. Raveendran was promoted to the position of Research Associate with continued sponsorship provided by LCI Foundation. Since then, Dr. Raveendran has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and continues to be published in high-impact academic journals. His most recent article was published in the journal Brain Stimulation—a journal that only accepts 10% of submitted articles for publication.

His article, “Reduction of collinear inhibition in observers with central vision loss using anodal transcranial direct current stimulation: A case series” was published in the March issue of Brain Stimulation: Basic, Translational, and Clinical Research in Neuromodulation. This first-ever publication on the usage of brain stimulation techniques reports intriguing information for restoring functional vision for people with age-related macular degeneration. The journal “seeks the highest level of research on the biophysics and biopsychophysics of stimulation paradigms as well as the use of these techniques as a probe to outline patterns of neural connectivity.” Dr. Raveendran’s publication in this highly selective journal highlights the quality of research that he is conducting in ERI.
