Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is particularly common among infants born before 32 weeks gestation. The disease is caused by abnormal blood vessels that pull on the underdeveloped retina as they grow. If allowed to progress, these abnormal vessels detach the retina from the eye, causing major sight loss. Peripheral retinal ablation with conventional laser therapy is destructive, and does not prevent all vision loss. This grand rounds presents case studies in which patients treated with vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors suggest that this may be useful in treating retinopathy of prematurity. Early intervention strategies, including patient monitoring and follow-up will be discussed.

Objectives:
- Analyze the pathogenesis of ROP and how clinical trials have impacted ROP standards of care.
- Determine what treatment is desirable and appropriate for infants with ROP.
- Determine early intervention strategies for interdisciplinary co-management and vision rehabilitation.
Target Audience: Physicians, optometrists, occupational therapists and allied health and education professionals.
All participants are required to complete and sign a “statement of attendance” form. After the program, a certificate of completion will be provided to activity participants based on documentation of actual attendance time.
