Hello BrailleNote users

If you have found that recently you have been unable to send emails with
your BrailleNote through your AT&T based internet service provider, you
will be happy to know that a simple modification to your BrailleNote’s
email account settings fixes this problem. Recently AT&T has made changes
to their email settings as a part of increased security against spammers.
To allow your BrailleNote’s email account to be accepted by AT&T’s
servers, make sure your name in your account settings is capitalized. To
make this modification do the following:

1. From the main menu press e for email.
2. Press space until you find “Setup options,” and press enter.
3. Press D to enter the directory of email accounts.
4. Press L to look up an account.
5. Press the space bar once and find your email account using the space
with dots 5-6 or 2-3 commands to move forward or backward through your
different accounts, (right and left arrows on a BrailleNote QT unit.)
6. Once you find your account, space to the field labeled “Your
Name?” and change it by pressing backspace with C, (control with K on
QT units.)
7. Capitalize the first letter of your name in this field and press
enter.
8. Exit out of the account settings and press Y to accept the changes.

You will now be able to send emails through AT&T servers again
successfully. If you have further questions on this process, please
contact your local HumanWare office for technical support.
It had come to the house earlier that week, so my dad brought it up for me to start getting ready. We opened the box and then I was left to my own devices.
The entire unit is very thin. From back to front it gets thinner. On the very back left corner you have the power plug, one USB port and an audio jack for headphones. On the right side you have the thunderbolt port, another USB port and an SAID card slot. From complete power off it takes about 22 seconds for voice-over to come on and be ready to use. I have the track pad commander on and running so now the gestures I know from IOS will translate over to this system. This means that I can flick tap and use other gestures. I only have two USB ports on here so to help I have a 7 port USB hub. This will allow me plug several other devices into my computer.
One other thing that you may have noticed is that I did not say anything about a cd drive. This is because the Air doesn't have one. In order to play cds you need to have an external cd drive. Luckily for me I happen to have one. I just hope it still works still. I will be testing it this weekend.
Thanks to a wonderful friend of mine I now have a copy of windows on the computer as well. This means that I can run either system whenever I need. I am using a program called VM ware fusion. It seems so far to be working well;. The only problem I have is that I do not have an insert key or an applications key. I called Serotek to see if they had any ideas for me. They said I should get a program called sharp keys. This program allows you to map one key to another key. When I get further along I will explain more. Windows seems to be going well otherwise though and my friend and I will get this figured out quickly.
Speaking of problems I had one other that I want to bring up. I am a college student at WSU. At WSU we have a Wifi system that is all over campus. The systems security is wpa2 enterprise. In order to connect to this network you have to have a username and password. I typed in my username and my password and we could not get it to work. Then I took it to the help desk at WSU, and they got it connected for a few minutes, but then when I tried to use the connection in the dorms I could not. This was quite frustrating. Finally it was a little past midnight and we tried our last ditch effort. For it seems to be working. I have had it connected for two days now. We will see what happens when I take it home.
This will be an interesting couple of weeks as I adjust and figure out what I'm doing in windows and what I'm doing in OSX. I want to keep people posted, so I will continue to post updates.

Discussion Topic: iPad

Join the discussion at http://www.envisionus.com/discussion: Today the new iPad came out. If you are using VoiceOver on a Macintosh computer, start think about alternatives to Microsoft Office. This article helps explain the details. Bob t.

MS Office for the Mac and Accessibility
UPDATE: April 15, 2011 – Microsoft has released Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Office for Mac – version 2011. I am happy to report that the new version now has the capacity for users to add alternative text to images. I’d like to take credit for this by assuming that Microsoft reads my blog, but I doubt that. In any case, this is a strong positive step.

Now the bad news: MS Office for Mac still does not fully work with VoiceOver. VoiceOver will read the toolbars and their content, and says that it is “interacting with document pane view” but that’s all. VoiceOver cannot read the content of the document pane, thus the product is still not accessible.

_____________

I was hoping that with my recent purchase of the latest version of MS Office for Mac – version 2011 – I would be happily telling you about the outstanding accessibility features of the new version. I was hoping that unlike its predecessor, MS Office for Mac 2008, there would now be the ability to add alternative descriptions to images (see below for an explanation as to why alternative descriptions are important) and that when converting or saving documents made by the new version, the PDFs and HTML pages created would all be accessible. I was sure that given the fact that this is a brand new version of Office it would work fluidly and fully with the Mac OSX native screen reader VoiceOver, a built-in feature in Mac OS since version 10.4 (Tiger) in 2005, nearly SIX YEARS AGO.

But no, I can’t report any of this because, in terms of accessibility for people with disabilities, Microsoft Office for the Mac – 2011 is a complete failure. Not only can you not make accessible documents with this product, it does not work with VoiceOver. That’s right; you cannot read documents created in MS Office for Mac 2001 with VoiceOver.

A VPAT – Voluntary Product Accessibility Template – “is a tool used to document a product’s conformance with the accessibility standards under Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. The purpose of the VPAT is to assist Federal contracting officials and other buyers in making preliminary assessments regarding the availability of commercial ‘Electronic and Information Technology’ products and services with features that support accessibility” (quoted source itic.org). The VPAT, as the name implies, is a voluntary statement made by the manufacturer regarding their own evaluation of their product in terms of how it meets the Section 508 requirements. In a rather bizarre finding, the VPAT for MS Office for Mac -2011 proudly notes that VoiceOver effectively works with the toolbars and “the ribbon” of MS Office for Mac 2011.

Unfortunately, Apple’s own office suite, iWork, isn’t much better when it comes to making accessible documents. iWork ’09, the latest iteration, does not have the capacity to make accessible documents either. Specifically, there is no way to add alternative descriptions to images or other objects inserted in a document.

But the good news is that at least VoiceOver can read the contents of documents made in iWorks in addition to working with all of the menus and toolbars.

If you need a word processor, or spreadsheet, or presentation software for your Mac, save your money and download the latest version of open source solution LibreOffice (3.3.0). Oh, if you don’t speak Spanish, the word “Libre” means “Free,” as in no dinero!
LibreOffice (v 3.3.0 for the Mac) does have the capacity to add Alternative Descriptions to image and works completely with VoiceOver. That said, when converting your LibreOffice documents to other formats, you will need to test them to make sure all of the accessibility features have been carried over.
