Estin Talavera, Estin Talavera, Assistive Technology Specialist
Hello, my name is Estin. I became acquainted with Envision through the Assistive Technology Camp in 2008. Back then the only real piece of technology I had was an old Braille Note. That year I received a Dell computer from Envision and JAWS for Windows. This enabled me to use a computer at home, which allowed me to gain confidence in my computer skills. The following year I attended AT Camp, and we worked with System Access, accessibility software similar to JAWS. I now had a portable computer that I could use almost anywhere with multiple systems. I began participating in more events and programs through Envision and when I graduated from Kansas State for the Blind I started volunteering at Envision events. I was able to volunteer for the Homework Club which I still do to this day. I also participate in the art and the martial arts programs. During my summers I was able to work at the KSSB summer school program. This gave me an opportunity to gain valuable experience working in the field of adaptive technology. This past summer I was one of three instructors for the Envision AT Camp. Now I am employed with Envision and we are starting a follow up program for all students that have attended the AT Camp. The first part of this program is a new forum on the Envision website. If you use or are interested in adaptive and assistive technology, I invite you to join our discussion.
